No one wants to have or be in a wreck.  We can all agree they are frightening and overwhelming.  Sometimes when they happen, we are so shocked that we panic and do not know what to do. Please read A Better Wrecker’s Guide to help you be prepared.

Be prepared before it happens

While your auto insurance policy may be long and confusing, you need to understand exactly what’s included. To ensure you are full covered in the event of a wreck you should always review your auto insurance policy closely when signing up or make any changes to it. Don’t be afraid to ask your insurance agent any questions you may have.

Safety first

At A Better Wrecker, we believe in safety first.

In the event of a wreck, first check for any injuries that you, your passengers or others involved may have sustained. If injuries are serious dial 911 immediately, if there are no injuries or if injuries are only minor, move your vehicle away from traffic and turn on your hazard lights to avoid another wreck. If you are unable to move your vehicle alert other drivers of the accident by using your hazard lights or flares, orange safety cones, or warning triangles if you have them.

Call for assistance

Once you have made sure everyone is ok, call the police. Depending on the severity of the wreck the responding officer will either file an incident report or an accident report to aid in the insurance process. When the officer arrives state the situation in a factual tone without blaming yourself or anyone else. Emotions can run high in a stressful situation; but, please remain calm and allow the officer to handle the situation.

If you are unable to drive your vehicle you would also need to call a towing company like A Better Wrecker. If your auto insurance policy covers towing, you should follow your insurance company’s policy to ensure you do not have to pay for your towing service out of pocket.

Documentation

Use your cell phone or a camera to take photos of the surrounding area, traffic signs, lane markings and any vehicles involved. Photos can provide a wealth of information and assistance in handling your insurance claim. Make sure and write down the name, contact information and insurance information for any drivers involved. To ensure you do not forget any of the details you can also write down anything and everything you can think of pertaining to the accident.

If there are any witnesses around, try and get their names, contact information and any important information they have about the accident.  Witnesses are the key in knowing what exactly happened and who is liable.

Get prepared

We prepare our homes for emergencies so why not prepare our vehicles for an emergency?  Again, we do not want an accident to happen; but, why not be prepared?  Make a kit for such an emergency and keep inside your vehicle.

Emergency kit

Enclose the following in a zippered pouch or a zip-lock baggie:

  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Copy of your insurance card
  • Disposable camera or battery pack/charger for your cell phone
  • Bandages
